8th January 1942
Left Port Swettenham at 0615hours and went to Klang. Moved into sumptuous quarters - Rajah Muda Selangor's house. Got cold storage supplies on tick, with the bill for the goods later presented to Major Fearon who was rather put out about it!
Pollock and I prepared a good breakfast of boiled haddock in milk; grilled sausages, grape fruit and coffee. In town, just in time to stop coolies looting Fraser and Neave’s warehouse. I stayed armed with pistol, Bren gun and 4 percussion grenades, and we took what stores we wanted.
We then went to Kuala Lumpur by car with Lt John Proctor and Pollock to 3 Corps H.Q. regarding our transfers43. Letters have to go to Head Quarters at Segamat so there will be further delay. Back to Klang in time for a short bombing raid. Also a raid over battery and a brisk interchange of shots. No planes downed. Had a very good dinner and had just gone to bed when we were all turfed out and put on an hour's notice to move. The reason being that the Japanese were just up the road near Kapar (18kms/11 miles north of Klang).44
In the account from Major Fearon’s diary, 2 and 4 platoons from the Independent Company engaged the enemy at Kapar. In previous accounts of events, it was presumed that Walter was part of 2 Platoon, however, his diary does not indicated that he went to Kapar over this time as his diary entries say:
8 moved to KLANG. Bombing
9 to BANTING (TELOK DATOH BANTING).

43 In the notes pages (p99) of James Richardson’s diary, he mentions that “Pollock and I were attempting to obtain a transfer to a special unit”. Have not been able to determine what ‘special unit’ this may have been.
