Tuesday 21st June 1944 - Port Blair

    15 Aircraft ranged for 0600 take off:-

      • 10 0f 810 Squadron
      • 5 of 847 Squadron

    Lt. (A) J.J. Cox, RNVR and crew of 847 Squadron returned, U/S in aircraft P9876, and one 847 aircraft U/S on deck. 13 aircraft therefore went, departing at 0615. Bomb load 2 x 500 M.C., 2 x 250 S.A.P.

    Attack fairly successful. One aircraft failed to return and was last seen near the target with smoke pouring from the engine.

    Aircraft returned at 0845 and all landed on safely. Lt. Cdr. Forde making an excellent landing with one bomb hung up. S/Lt. Thompson managed to jettison one hung up just before landing on.

        Lt. Dennis. S/Lt. Cook. P.O Trietline.  - P9961

        S/Lt. Ebbs. S/Lt. Stocks, P.O Bolland. - LS 465

    LS 471 the aircraft which failed to return was piloted by Lieutenant  Basil Willington Aldwell R.N.V.R. who had been with the squadron since the 13th March 1944. His popularity was enormous and it is hoped that he and crew may have managed to reach safety in the jungle.
