25 - 26 December

2nd Patrol

Thurs 25 (Christmas Day and Walter’s birthday): Major Fearon had hoped to give us an Xmas dinner but this not possible. Our new boat is a Thornycroft Diesel No. 43. A fine craft22.

Holiday and rest in the morning. Working on our boat in the afternoon and River Patrol commenced 2130 hours upriver and continued until 2400. Guards all night. Delightful on the river, but we never know when hostile action will break out. Still quiet however.

Standing patrol all night until 0600 on Boxing Day. Spoke to several sampans. River difficult to navigate in places. No activity. Continued patrol upriver to Kg. Pulau Tiga. Quite uneventful. Damned hot most of the day. I was nearly swept away by the current while looking for a deep channel; accidentally fell into it!. Stuck on a sandbank for two hours at K.S.Bidor on return. Back at Telok Anson by 1900 hours. Telok Anson bombed by three planes during the day. Seven killed and 12 injured by machine-gunning. Water supply cut.

Reference

22 From Richardson’s diary Notes: Thurs 25: The two Customs launches (double deckers) were not suitable for the job. Exchanged for a sleek diesel craft; Thornycroft No. 43.
