    5. The following infm on SANDAKAN airfield has been taken from a Captured document dated 20 Jan 43. A notation on the sketoc states "Used as inter communication airflield for large type airplanes ( Indicates present construction situation) Barracks facilities - No facilities nearby. L of C quarters in SANDAKAN can accommodate one squadron.

    Repairs and Supplies : 92, 87 petrel available. Supplies for large type airplanes are scares.

    Enlargement : It is being planned to make this into a large type airplane field in the future. It will be extended 1200 m to the SE and the runway will be moved to a NORTH and SOUTH position. Plans to have airfield completed by latter part cf Oct.

    Present utilisation : The plan is to use the airfield as inter-communication airfield connecting MANILA to JAVA by the middle of Feb. At present medium type airplanes can land.

6. SHIPPING ROUTES

    Convoy Route No 19, MIRI to SANDAKAN

    Pass NORTH tip of BORNEO, pass through SOUTH Main. Channel of BALABAC STRAIT to SANDAKAN. Overnight anchorage, BONGAO Island.

7. SHIPBUILDING

    Reports, believed to be reliable, say that building of wooden ships is in progross. Sizes from 100 to 500 tons. Diesel engined.
