Top Secret

"KINGFISHER" PROJECT

The following is a brief summary of the main features in the SANDAKAN Area which are likely to be of importance in the planning of the proposed airborne operation:-

a. SANPAKAN HARBOUR:

SANDAKAN HARBOUR is a large bay extending about 15 miles inland from the entrance and about 3 to 6 miles wide. The exntrance to the bay between TANJQNG PAPAT and BERHALA IS. on the N.W. and TANJONG ARU on the S.E. is about l.25 miles wide.

The Admiralty classification of the harbour is a "D" class anchorage. The holding ground and shelter is good. Any number of ships can be accommodated, but size is limited by the depths in the approach which is 4 fathoms in the shallowest part at mean low water springs.

The inner part of the harbour is mostly unsurveyed, and entirely undeveloped, and the shores of the main part are fringed by mangrove backed by jungle.

b. SANDAKAN TOWN :

The town is situated on the NORTH side of the harbour about 1 mile S.W. of TE PAPAT and Covers an area of about 1,500 yds. by 500 yds.

The main points of interest are the Arms Depot, Japanese officers' quarters, the W/T transmitting station at the Post Office and the Japanese Barracks.

There are good landing facilities at the Government Wharf which can be reached at high water by ships drawing up to 30 ft., also 3 timber piers and 3 landing stages.

c. W/T RECEIVING STATION:

This is situated at about the 2 mile peg NORTH of the town on the KABON CHINA ROAD and is guarded by a Japanese outpost of 4 men. The strength of the detachment is not known.

Nearby the Golf Course provides a possible D.Z. in JUNCTION KABON CHINA ROAD - SIBUGA ROAD: Situated at the 6 mile peg on the KABON CHINA ROAD and apparently unguarded.

There is no alternative road for motor transport from SANDAKAN town to the airfield and P/W Camp other than through this road junction.
